Each charter hour contributes the charter rate minus the direct cost of flying that hour, such as fuel, engine reserves and hourly maintenance. Breakeven hours are annual fixed costs divided by that contribution. Profit is contribution times expected hours, minus fixed costs.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a fixed cost?
Costs you pay whether or not the aircraft flies: insurance, hangar, crew salaries, training, management fees, subscriptions and loan or lease payments.
What counts as a direct cost?
Costs that rise with each hour flown: fuel, engine and maintenance reserves, landing fees and crew per diem.
Can I use this for a lender conversation?
Yes. Lenders want to see how the aircraft pays for itself, and this is the core of that story.
